Japanese Garden in Parque Bosque los Colomos

In 1971, the Mexican government and the state of Jalisco in Mexico requested that a Japanese garden be donated by the Kyoto city government. Their request was supported by the late Morita Ichiro, founding president of the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, as well as by the honorary consul of Mexico in the city of Kyoto.
In 1980, Guadalajara, the capital city of the state of Jalisco, and the city of Kyoto pledged to become sister cities. In 1990, a group which included the mayor of Guadalajara traveled to Kyoto to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the sister-city relationship. They officially requested the cooperation of Kyoto’s mayor in constructing a Japanese garden in Guadalajara. In 1991, Mexico’s ambassador to Japan traveled to Kyoto and announced that a Japanese garden would be constructed in Guadalajara to commemorate the 10th anniversary of sister-city relations with Kyoto, as well as the 450th anniversary of Guadalajara. The garden was to be a symbol of friendship between Japan and Mexico. He also reported to the mayor of Kyoto that the Mexican government would give its full cooperation in the construction of the garden, and asked Kawamura Tsuneaki, the secretary of Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, for additional assistance.
Following this sequence of events, the garden was built on the model of Kyoto’s Daigoji Sanboin temple garden, with alterations made to accommodate the local vegetation.
